El pueblo de Tarabuco (a 65 kilómetros de Sucre) en el cual durante todos los domingos del año, se despliega uno de los mercados más coloridos de Sudamérica. Desde muy temprano, artesanos y tejedores se dan cita en la plaza principal y comienzan a armar los puestos en los que exhibirán a lo largo del día, los artículos que crean con sus propias manos.

El mercado se extiende hasta el mediodía y una vez finalizado, los lugareños aprovechan para interactuar con los visitantes. Algunas tejedoras muestran como hilan la lana en los telares de caña, mientras que un grupo de indígenas exhibe el Pujllay (una de las danzas más representativas del lugar) acompañados de instrumentos autóctonos tales como la quena, el sikus y el charango.

Pero no todo termina allí. Dicho por los antropólogos, Tarabuco es el pueblo de los Andes que mejor ha conservado sus vestimentas y sus costumbres. Es por eso que al llegar, el viajero se sorprende con los extraños trajes de los pobladores y con las negativas de algunos ancianos (vestidos igual que los antiguos del imperio incaico) que se niegan a ser fotografiados por que creen que la cámara “les robará el alma”.
